Visitor's Guide


From Bryce Resort in Basye, Virginia, to the small and quaint surrounding towns, the Shenandoah Valley offers many attractions that would accommodate a wide range of interests. Below are some of the things you may need to know when planning your trip.

RESTAURANTS

Hot Plates Cafe & Club 45 - 540.856.3233

The Restaurant @ Bryce Resort - 540.856.2121 or 800.821.1444
Enjoy dining in an elegant but relaxed atmosphere, located in the Main Lodge of Bryce Resort at the base of the ski slopes. Reservations Recommended. The Copper Kettle opens daily at 11am and serves until last call on Friday and Saturday night and until 9pm on Sunday thru Thursday. 

The Ski Lodge
Seasonal operations, located on Fairway Drive, near the front nine of the golf course and next to the Bryce Resort main lodge. The Express offers a great selection for guests on the go and is also the only place on the Mountain for pizza. In winter, the Ski Lodge (at the bottom of the slopes) serves a cafeteria style menu for skiers and families. There is a large fireplace in the Ski Lodge to warm you up between runs.

ATTRACTIONS

Shenandoah Caverns - 1.888.4CAVERN
Opened to the public in 1922, these are the closest major caverns to the Basye area. The only Virginia cavern with elevator service. At the same location, visit American Celebration on Parade which features spectacular floats from famous parades. Visit their web site for their special discounts and features.

Luray Caverns - 540.743.6551
The largest caverns in Eastern America features cathedral-sized rooms with ceilings 10 stories high. Luray Caverns is filled with towering stone columns and crystal-clear pools.

Endless Caverns - 540.896.CAVE
Featuring the longest cave tour in Virginia, the Endless Caverns offers guided tours year round. Make sure to visit the gift and rock shop.

New Market Battlefield State Historical Park & Hall of Valor Civil War Museum - 866.515.1864 or 540.740.3101
Visit the site made famous by the involvement of VMI Cadets and the original farm house that stood in the center of fighting. Located approximately 25-30 minutes from Bryce in New Market and open daily 9am to 5pm.

Shenandoah Valley Music Festival - 800.459.3396
Orkney Springs, less than 10 minutes from Bryce Resorts, has summer concerts on select weekends at the historic hotel. Venues like the Fairfax Symphony, Eileen Ivers, and the Tom Cunningham Orchestra help to incorporate their big band, symphony, folk, and jazz sounds. Pavilion and lawn seating. LOCAL TOWNS

Orkney Springs
Less than five miles west is a cluster of Civil War buildings, including the famous Orkney Springs Hotel, the Virginia House, and the 1853 Maryland House. Orkney Springs is listed in the National Register of Historic Landmarks and its hotel was constructed between 1873 and 1876. It's a lovely place to spend an afternoon.

Mount Jackson
Experience Civil War history, antique hunting and more as you explore in and around Mount Jackson, the closest town to the Basye area. Visit their web site for day-tripping ideas.

Edinburg
Edinburg is a small town, located approximately 20 miles from Bryce Resort.  There are several charming shops along Main Street. Come and see what small town life is all about.

New Market
Designated a historical district in 1972, New Market is located just 25 minutes from Bryce Resort.
New Market is only one of many Civil War sites in the Shenandoah Valley. In addition to the historical sites and shops, New Market is also the home of the Shenandoah Valley Tourist Information Center. The tourist center is an excellent source of information for Valley tourism www.visitshenandoah.org.

Fort Valley
Horseback Riding (horses and mules) and guided trail rides are available at the Fort Valley Horseback Riding Stable. Located at 299 South Fort Valley Rd, Fort Valley, VA 22652. Approximately 40 minutes from Bryce Resort. Call 1.888.754.5771 for more information.

Winter

Skiing/Snowboarding/Tubing
Bryce Resort offers great packages for beginners which include rental equipment, a group lesson, and a carpet lift/slope use ticket. The minimum age for this package is 8 years; however, there is a  SKIwee program available for children ages 4 1/2 to 8 years. Please register at the ski school for equipment rentals and program. Summer

Zip Line Mountain Tour
This exciting ride consists of eight zip line platform stations connected by over 3,000 feet of cable traversing down the ski slopes and through the woods. With speeds of up to 40 miles per hour, riders will experience the thrill of flying through the trees and sailing across the open ski slopes, as high as 65 feet above the ground, as they work their way from the top to the bottom of the mountain.

Climbing Wall & Bungee Ride - Visit Bryce Resort this summer for the new state of the art climbing wall and bungee ride.

Golf

Miniature Golf
Stoney Creek Lilliputt is located on the lawn of Bryce Resort. Call 540.856.3698 for hours of operation.

Lake Laura
This 45-acre, man-made lake offers a grassy picnic area, sandy beach, fishing, paddleboat and canoe rentals, swimming, and a 3 mile hiking trail. Lake Laura is stocked with bass, pike, perch, walleye, catfish, and native trout.

Tennis
Tennis courts are available and may be reserved in the Bryce Resort Golf Shop. Call 800.821.1444 ext. 249 for availability.

Grass Skiing, Mountain Boarding, and Lift Rides
These activities require physical strength, balance, and fitness. Recommended for athletic students 10 years and older.
Mandatory check-in at 12:15pm for all first time packages. Reservations for mountain boarding and grass skiing may be emailed to skischool@bryceresort.com

Mountain Tubing
Waterless downhill tubing. No special clothing or skills needed.

Summer, Fall, Spring

Hiking
There are approximately 700 miles of blazed and named hiking trails in the area. Trail maps and guide books can be purchased in the Bryce Golf Shop and further information can be obtained from the Hiking Upward website or via the "Take a Hike" group at Bryce. The Mountain Courier, a free local newspaper found in our office, also has a monthly hike detailed with a map and instructions.
